Most people go through life always expecting the worst and not believing in themselves. Doing this is the equivalent of going through life with the brakes on. When pessimism fills your subconscious, you won’t perform as well. Think about it, when you don’t feel something can be done, you don’t work as hard on it and therefore, set yourself up for failure. So without further ado, this is how to become an optimist.

What it means to be an optimist

If you want to know how to become an optimist it’s important to understand what an optimist really is. Being an optimist doesn’t mean that you never see the negatives in life.  An optimist is someone who sees’s reality exactly how it is, and then finds solutions to the obstacles they may be facing. It’s about seeing the negatives and the positives and believing those obstacles can be overcome. It can be any belief. A belief in God, fate or destiny, or even a belief in themselves. When this belief is matched with a willingness to find solutions and overcome obstacles, success is pretty much guaranteed!

Remember being an optimist isn’t just about having your head in the clouds but also your feet on the ground. So don’t ignore reality, negative events and bad circumstances in your life. Instead, you need to find the best in any situation and have the belief and hope that you will succeed. No matter what!

Going from being a pessimist to an optimist is hard. So here are some top tips that you can use to start becoming more optimistic. Results may not be instant but if you stick with this, change your behavior and mindset then eventually you will live a happier and more fulfilling life.

Stop seeing obstacles

Stop seeing obstacles as things that are holding you back from the path to success. Instead, you need to understand obstacles ARE the path to success. When you’re an optimist you know that every obstacle brings you new wisdom and strength and will give you valuable knowledge for the rest of the journey! Instead of seeing roadblocks as obstacles, begin to see them as opportunities!

Focus on possibility, not impossibility

It’s incredibly easy to look at impossible situations in your life give up and go back to the 9-5. But when you’re truly an optimistic person you stop focusing on the impossibilities. You can’t change them so there’s no point focusing your time and energy on them. Instead, you’re always looking for new possibilities that will take you where you need to go. Doing this will show you new roads that weren’t visible before.


Question your circumstances

Every time something ‘negative’ happens in your life ask yourself these questions:

  • “What is one thing that is good or positive about this situation”
  • “What is one thing I can learn from this situation”
  • “What is one opportunity within this situation”

When you find the answer to these questions, any situation becomes a positive one. So begin to make it a habit to ask yourself these questions whenever something seems to go wrong in your life. You might find the positive from this situation far outweighs any negatives.

Start your day with gratitude

If you want to know how to be an optimist this is my favorite tip. When you wake up in the morning be grateful. Be grateful that you’ve woken up. Many other people won’t. If you’re reading this be grateful that you live in a country with access to the internet. Be grateful for everything you have. And most importantly carry this spirit of gratefulness through the day. It’s hard not to be optimistic when you realize how much life has already given you.

Record your daily progress

Start taking the time to record your progress no matter how small it is. And don’t pay attention the results every day. After 3 or 4 months look back on your results and if you’ve stuck to what you want to achieve, you’ll see just how far you’ve come. This can be an amazing way to become an optimist but only if you stick to it. If you don’t feel like you can stick to recording progress every day then this might not be the best idea for you. When you record on and off for a few months but don’t see your results properly, you may become discouraged. However, if you are a disciplined person this tip can be perfect for you.

Surround yourself with optimistic people


What better way to learn how to become an optimist, than by spending time

with optimistic people. As the old adage goes “birds of a feather, flock together” If you want to become an optimistic person spend time with people who already are. If you do this for long enough, some of their behavior is bound to rub off on you.

Sometimes you may think you’re an optimist. I did this for a long time but only when I started to listen to my inner dialogue did I begin to realize how pessimistic I was. So if you believe you’re an optimist right now it may be worth your time listening to your inner monologue. If you find yourself dwelling on what could go wrong you may be pessimistic.  While most people tell you that it’s better to be one or the other. The truth is they both have benefits that are going to help you in life. So whether you’re an optimist or pessimist you can still take the time to find out your strong points and work with them!

Overcome failure better – We are all going to fail at some point in our lives, chances are the more optimistic you are the more you are going to fail. And this is a good thing. Boosts productivity – When you’re pessimistic you don’t have the belief that everything is going to work out for you. Instead, you believe that it’s down to you to get the life you want. Therefore you work a lot harder than someone who is optimistic. Having anxiety in the back of your mind about your future causes your productivity to be boosted.

Hard to get disappointed – When you always prepare for the worst it’s hard for you to ever get disappointed. This is one of the best perks of being a pessimist. If you never have any expectations you can’t be let down. But when something does go right you’re even more happy that it happened because you didn’t expect it!

You know when to quit – I am not a fan of quitting. I don’t think you should ever quit unless there’s no other choice. But knowing when it’s time to throw in the towel and stop wasting time and energy is super important. So being a pessimist can help you realize when it’s not going to work and that it’s time to move onto something else.

There’s nothing wrong with being optimistic or pessimistic. The problem begins when you’re too much of one or the other.
