25 Gautama Buddha Quotes For Inner Peace

I’ve never been a religious person, and I can’t say I have any idea about what happens to you when you die. But, recently I’ve been looking at the teachings of a lot of Eastern religions. And I have to say while things like Christianity and Islam has never made any sense to me personally, I do really think the teachings of Buddhism can help you on your life’s journey! With that being said here are 25 Gautama Buddha quotes that may just change your perspective on life and how you’re living it & hopefully guide you to move towards your dreams!

25 Gautama Buddha Quotes For Inner Peace

"A jug fills drop by drop"

“A jug fills drop by drop”

If you’re trying to complete a  mammoth task you may feel like the job is never going to end. I sometimes feel like that when trying to create this website and make everything perfect for it. But, when you remember that even the smallest actions are going to add up eventually definitely gives you the motivation you need to keep pushing forward!

"All that we are is the result of what we have thought"

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought”

This teaching has been said in so many different ways by so many different people. “You reap what you sow” “What we think we become.” Well, there’s a reason it’s repeated so often. BECAUSE IT’S TRUE! Your thoughts shape your actions, which shape your habits, which shape your life. So if you want to change your life you start by changing your thoughts!

"As you walk and eat and travel, be where you are. Otherwise you will miss most of your life."

“As you walk and eat and travel, be where you are. Otherwise you will miss most of your life.”

How often do you find yourself always striving to have something new? Always thinking “if I just have this” “When I have some time off” etc etc. I’m extremely guilty of this as well. But the truth is if you wish your life away that’s exactly what’s going to happen. So begin to be present at the moment. You’ll thank yourself for it!

"Be the witness of your thoughts. You are what observes, not what you observe"

“Be the witness of your thoughts. You are what observes, not what you observe”

This is a difficult one to wrap your head around. I only understand it fully after listening to The Power Of Now. Try to remember that you are not the thoughts that pop into your head. That is why you don’t have complete control of a lot of your thoughts. They are just reactions to stimuli around you. Once you realise this you’ll begin to be separate from your thoughts.

"Do not look for a sanctuary in anyone except yourself."

“Do not look for a sanctuary in anyone except yourself.”

How many people do you know that obsess about being in a relationship all the time? Or perhaps they always want to hang out with people and can’t bear to be by themselves. Maybe perhaps you’re that someone. If you are, then begin to realise that you any external happiness can be taken away from you and if you want to true peace, then you should find it internally.  This isn’t too say forget about your friends or significant other. But learn to find peace within yourself instead. You and your friends will appreciate it so much more.

"Do not overlook negative actions merely because they are small; however small a spark may be, it can burn down a haystack as big as a mount."

“Do not overlook negative actions merely because they are small; however small a spark may be, it can burn down a haystack as big as a mount.”

This is such a great metaphor because it truly shows you how one negative action can have dire consequences. No matter how small that action is. For example, I used to be TERRIBLE at skipping the gym for a month at a time, all because I chose not to go one time. I’d tell myself what’s one more time. And I’d keep doing this over and over. So avoid doing this as much as you can. But remember you are only human, so if you do slip up, just make sure you get back on the horse as soon as possible.

"Do not overlook tiny good actions, thinking they are of no benefit; even tiny drops of water, in the end, will fill a huge vessel."

“Do not overlook tiny good actions, thinking they are of no benefit; even tiny drops of water, in the end, will fill a huge vessel.”

I love this Gautama Buddha quotes and they definitely going hand in hand. Because the complete opposite is true. Small positive actions can also change your life for the better. Going back to the gym. It’s not just going one time that’s going to make me fit and healthy. But going repeatedly. What area of your life can you notice this in? Perhaps it’s completing a personal project, or getting a promotion at work. Whatever it is, remember it’s going to be small positive steps every day that are going to get you there.

"Doubt everything. Find your own light."

“Doubt everything. Find your own light.”

What I love about this and what really made the rest of this Gautama Buddha quotes ring true to me is the fact you are told not to blindly believe them. In fact, don’t blindly believe anything. Make your own judgment on whether it’s right for you or not. What’s right for you might be completely wrong for someone else. So if these quotes do ring true for you then live by them! But if not, simply find the ideas that do.

"Even as a solid rock is unshaken by the wind, so are the wise unshaken by praise or blame."

“Even as a solid rock is unshaken by the wind, so are the wise unshaken by praise or blame.”

What I love about this quote is that instead of telling you not to be shaken by peoples blame or dislike of you. You also shouldn’t be shaken by their praise. When you let peoples praise build you up, once again you’re building your happiness on external factors. What’s going to happen when that praise stops? Why not instead praise yourself and be proud of what you have accomplished. Instead of looking for other people to be.

"Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most."

“Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.”

What happened yesterday doesn’t matter. All that matters is to do as much as you can today. If you live by this motto you’ll notice you’ll fill your day with productivity and happiness and you’ll be well on your way to success in any area you want it. Check out some more great quotes for the morning here.

"From a withered tree, a flower blooms."

“From a withered tree, a flower blooms.”

I love this quote. From your greatest struggle, you are going to find your greatest strength. While you may think in the moment that the suffering you’re going through has no meaning or purpose, remember it is going to make you a better person in some way. It’s going to strengthen you in some way. And in that way you are going to have another beautiful characteristic added to your personality.

"Greater in battle than the man who would conquer a thousand-thousand men, is he would just conquer just one - himself."

“Greater in battle than the man who would conquer a thousand-thousand men, is he would just conquer just one – himself.”

As you know already, learning to conquer yourself is going to be the hardest thing you ever do. It is a constant battle inside of you to do the right thing. To keep working when you really don’t want to. To turn the other cheek when someone flies off the handle at you. Bu doing this is going to make you a great man or woman in the long run.

"If we fail to look after others when they need help, who will look after us when we need help?"

“If we fail to look after others when they need help, who will look after us when we need help?”

If you don’t help other people and look after them, why on earth would they look after you? You shouldn’t help other people just so you can wait for them to return the favour. You should do it out of the kindness of your heart. But know that when you do help other people you’re also helping yourself because you are going to open more doors in the future that may have otherwise been shut.

"If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading."

“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.”

This sounds like common sense, but it’s important to make sure you’re definitely heading in a direction you want to go. You may think that you’re heading in the right direction because you want to be happy and successful. But if you find that your actions do not align with this then you’re going to end up heading exactly where your actions align with.

"Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again."

“Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again.”

Your past is there for you to learn from. So often we find ourselves replaying old mistakes over and over in our heads. This is the worst thing you can do. Mistakes are made simply so you can course correct and head toward success. If you do find you’ve made a mistake, let go of it. Learn the lesson and simply let go.

"No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path."

“No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.”

You are the only problem you will ever have and you are the only solution. While other people can help you and give you guidance, no one else is going to be able to live your life for you. This is your path to walk so do the best you can!

"Nothing can harm you as much as your own thoughts unguarded."

“Nothing can harm you as much as your own thoughts unguarded.”

Just like a previous quote mentioned how your thoughts shape everything you do. If you leave your thoughts to run free and think what you want, you could end up doing serious harm to your life. Every time you tell yourself you’re not good enough you reinforce a negative thought. Every time you tell yourself you can’t do something you reinforce a negative though. Guard your thoughts. If you tell yourself you can’t do something, then tell yourself you can 10 times.

"Nothing is forever except change."

“Nothing is forever except change.”

Never place your happiness in things or people because neither of them are going to last. Friendship ends, items break. Be happy in the moment, enjoy your life in the moment and don’t cling to things. This is how you are going to find true happiness. Enjoy things while you have them but don’t depend on them.

"Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think"

“Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think”

Another reminder that we become what we think. You are literally shaping your life with every thought. The more positive thoughts the more you reinforce positivity in your life. Remind yourself that you are perfect just the way you are, that you can have inner peace in your life in this moment. And you will create an amazing life for yourself.

"Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without."

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”

You will never find peace in external things, only deep inside yourself. Stop chasing happiness and contentment. Stop telling yourself if you just have ‘this’ your life will be better. Enjoy your life as it is RIGHT NOW, that is where you will find peace.

"The only real failure in life is not to be true to the best one knows."

“The only real failure in life is not to be true to the best one knows.”

The chances of you being born are 1 in 400 trillion. There is never going to be another person on earth that is like you. So if you’re on this Earth you have a responsibility to be who you truly are. Don’t hide yourself from other people and the world, you’re only doing a disservice to them. Be you and be proud!

"The past is already gone, the future is not yet here. There's only one moment for you to live, and that is the present moment."

“The past is already gone, the future is not yet here. There’s only one moment for you to live, and that is the present moment.”

You can’t control the future any more than you can change the past. You only get to decide right NOW how you’re going to feel. If you’re going to be happy or sad. So make the right choice.

"The way is not in the sky, the way is in the heart."

“The way is not in the sky, the way is in the heart.”

Stop looking to external sources to find your purpose. Look within yourself. What you are looking for lies within your own heart!

"There is no path to happiness: happiness is the path"

“There is no path to happiness: happiness is the path”

Another recurring idea that these Gautama Buddha quotes have is that you don’t find happiness. Happiness is a journey. So enjoy your journey! That is true happiness. Peace in the moment.

"Your purpose in life is to find your life purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it."

“Your purpose in life is to find your life purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.”

We’re all looking for that something, the thing that is going to make us feel alive. The thing we’re willing to give our lives for. Once you find this thing go after it with all your heart and soul. Never stop once you’ve found it! No one else on this earth can do what you’re supposed to do.
