Great Things Never Came From Comfort Zones

Great things never came from comfort zones

Have you ever heard the saying great things never came from comfort zones? If you’re like me, you may have spent a lot of time in your comfort zone. Feeling like you’re inside a mental cage in your own mind. Struggling to get out. And the more you push, the more fear you feel. But no matter how old you are or how much you’ve missed out on it’s never too late to leave your comfort zone. In fact, the more you’ve missed out on and the older you are the more imperative it is to start leaving your comfort zone.

How To Know If You’re Stuck In Your Comfort Zone

You may be in your comfort zone and not even be aware of it. Sometimes people get so used to doing the same thing they forget that there’s more to life. And end up getting stuck in a rut or routine. Doing the same thing over and over. Constantly thinking “there’s more to life than this.”  However, there are some telltale signs that can show you if you’re clinging to your comfort zone. And it’s time to leave if you are.

The biggest tell-tale sign is if you find yourself holding back in life. Great things never came from comfort zones. And by staying in yours you could be: holding back from a new job, a new experience you wish to have, or maybe even grand thoughts in your head that you don’t want to think about.

Or maybe you have a great idea that you know you should talk about but don’t have the courage to. Maybe it’s something funny you want to say or an interesting conversation you wish to have and because you let your comfort zone hold you back someone else beats you to it. If you notice this happening in your life all the time or something that resembles this, then it’s time for you to start realizing why it is so important to leave your comfort zone.

Great Things Never Came From Comfort Zones

Why you should leave your comfort zone

There are 100 reasons you should want to leave your comfort zone. But if you can’t think of any, here are a few big ones that can help you. And some of my favorite ones, that have helped me push out of my comfort zone and can also push you out of yours.

(FOMO) Fear Of Missing Out

The number one best way to push yourself out of your comfort zone is through the fear of missing out. Stop thinking about what can go wrong. And start thinking about what you’re going to be missing out on if you don’t take the chances that are in front of you.
In fact, every time you see yourself missing out on an opportunity that you have been too scared to take, make a note by writing it down or remembering it. Keep doing this for every single thing you miss out on. And eventually, you will see how much of your life you are missing out on. Resulting in you immediately starting to take more positive action.

Living An Unfulfilled Life

If you think the fear of FOMO is bad. OR missing out on an event every once in a while; Just imagine what your life will be like if you miss the majority of exciting opportunities. The small events that you miss out on every day will eventually add up to years that you have missed out on. And then a lifetime of missed opportunities.
And the same is true the other way round. You can have a whole new life open ahead of you TODAY. If you take every opportunity that is given to you and make the most of them.

Never Bringing What You Have To Offer Into The World

Maybe the thought of missing out doesn’t bother you, or the thought of living and unfulfilled life. But what about the thought of not bringing something good into this world. Start thinking about how selfish it may be for you to hold back something great from the world. You have something in you that can make the world better. And if you don’t bring it out, you are not only letting yourself down, but the world as a whole will be a little bit more empty.

To Break Out Of Your Routine And Make Life Less Boring

It is true that great things never came from comfort zones. And you will never know this more until you start breaking out of your routine and doing new activities. The more of the world you experience, the more you will notice that your comfort zone has been holding you back this whole time.

If you’ve been stuck in the same routine for a long time, you may just be used to it. Thinking that’s normal. Let me tell you life has so much more to offer you. So why not take a chance to try something new. And push yourself out of your comfort zone.

To Become More Confident

When you break out of your comfort zone you don’t JUST become more confident. You also become stronger and reach higher levels in life. And the great thing is every time you push your comfort zone, the actions you take become a little bit easier, your mind gets stronger and stronger.

If you haven’t expanded your comfort zone in a while it may seem scary. Just remember, everybody feels like this at first and the strongest people are the ones that get up and take action. No matter how small and full of fear they are.

To Live An Amazing Life

This is MY main motivation for growing out of my comfort zone, maybe it can be yours too. Like I said before great things never came from comfort zones and an amazing life will never come from your comfort zone either. Just think about the life that you could live and the things that you could do if you didn’t have a comfort zone. You could travel the world, start an amazing business, help thousands of people.

Because the truth is there is nothing really stopping you except your own mind and your own limitations.

Have These Reasons Helped You?

I hope after reading this you feel inspired to do something new and step out of your comfort zone. Just by writing this article, I’ve also stepped out of mine. Because instead of typing like I normally do, I’ve been dictating everything into a speech to text app. Meaning anyone can hear what I’m saying out loud. Which is out of my comfort zone.
So what big step are you going to take right now to change your future and step out of your comfort zone?
Remember great things never came from comfort zones and it’s time for you to step out of yours and start living the life that is destined for you.

Comfort Zone Challenges – The Boxing Gym

This is my first challenge. And as of now, I think I’m just going to leave my boxing days behind and stick to a regular gym. Today wasn’t about signing up for a lifelong hobby, I am more than comfortable doing that. But rather, throwing myself into a situation in alien terrain. (Being in a confined space with 30 sweaty men who want to punch my head).

But all jokes aside, this was an uncomfortable experience for me. For a few reasons:

  1. I was flying solo.
  2. I’ve never been boxing or had a fight in my life
  3. And I forgot to take my water bottle…

So What Happened?

The moment I got through the door I knew I was in trouble. Immediately it became apparent that everyone had a partner. And I hadn’t even signed up yet. But that did not deter me. I was resolute to see this through. So I go into the changing room, put my gear on, pack my stuff away and head out to wait with the rest of the boxers.

Now I’m in the lion’s den. I’m tightly packed in a small hallway with a group of boxers and we’re all waiting for the group before us to finish their warm down so we could take the floor. At this point, I’m just standing there by myself, listening in on the conversations around me when I hear one guy say “I really can’t wait to practice [insert kick here]” And then I realized. This wasn’t the boxing group I was stood with. It was the kickboxing group. The boxing group was warming up in front of me, not warming down.

Now I’ve got three choices:

  • Try and join the warmup.
  • Stay silent, head up to kickboxing and try to act like I belong.
  • Stand awkwardly on the sidelines and wait for the warmup to be over.

Luckily before I have to make my decision, I spot someone I know, my old boss. She tells me to jump into the warm-up unaware, and to be honest, I still don’t know if she was just goading me on or trying to help. However, I don’t have to make the decision. I’m saved by the bell and the warm-up ends, and I slide in like the slippery snake I am.

I slither into the training area and I get told to try and find a sparring partner. Obviously, everyone around me has already partnered up, so I end up with someone who quite clearly doesn’t want to be my partner. We do our first exercise trying to punch each other’s shoulders and he keeps nailing me. But I also got a few hits in.

What Happened Next…

After this, the trainer asks me if this is my first session. I tell him it is and he moves me to a separate ring and I get trained with two more beginners. The training is pretty normal, learning how to stand, position your weight etc. And all I’m thinking is “great now I’m with other people who are the same level as me.”

The only problem, there’s 3 of us, and the other two partner up. And the guy I end up getting partnered with has 6 inches on me and is twice as muscular. He absolutely wails on me. He asked me multiple times if he was being too hard, but I thought this was some sort of initiation test and I wasn’t about to crack, so I tell him “Nah I barely notice it..”. Big mistake. This guy basically knocks me around for the rest of the hour. And I barely land a punch on him, because I’ve never hit anybody before and I didn’t want to hurt him.

The Warm Down

The “warm down” was even harder. It was just pure cardio. Let me just say that I’m in pretty good shape, or at least I thought I was. Because this warm down absolutely killed me. The first thing we had to do was 10 pressups run 15 feet to the other side of the room and do 10 burpees and then back to do the same thing. But only 9 then 8. And you ALSO had a partner that couldn’t leave until you were finished. So not only was I one of the SLOWEST people doing this. At this point, I haven’t had a drink, so I’m also one of the THIRSTIEST.

I tried to hold out for as long as I can. Because I don’t want to look like a bitch. But after I get to 8 left, I just need a drink and I tell him “sorry mate, we’re coming in last, I NEED a drink” he just laughs and waits for me. And when I get back the next warm down is even weirder. We basically have to leapfrog over each other. It sounds easy but at this point, I am SO tired, I can’t quite make it over this guy. So I keep dragging my nuts across his head every time I jump over him.

And that was the last warm down I had to do, the rest was history. All that was left was going into the changing rooms and getting greeted by loads of dicks and and heading home, where I am now sat aching away.

How Did This Help?

For one of my first comfort zone challenges, I thought I better start strong. While some people might find doing this easy it definitely made me feel uncomfortable. But after doing this I sort of learned that people are going to be friendly even if you are slowing them down.

I also got the reminder that nothing is as bad as you make it out to be in your head. When I got there I was way less nervous than before. And once I knew I couldn’t bottle it and had to stay, well I’m pretty sure at one point I actually enjoyed it.

I’m definitely going to use this experience as a building block to build upon.

My next comfort zone challenge is going to be recording my first youtube video! Where you can watch me talk about this story AND find out a little bit about me and why I’m doing these 30 challenges!

The ONE TRUE Comfort Zone Challenge

Are you tired of reading the same blog articles about ’50 comfort zone challenges to undertake’ or the ‘THE TOP 5 COMFORT ZONE CHALLENGES’? Or perhaps instead you’ve read 100 articles that give advice such as ‘Do it in small steps’ and ‘Allow yourself to be vulnerable.’ Either way what if I told you there was ONE comfort zone challenge that was better than all of these?

And that’s not to say that these articles aren’t great because they are. In fact, I’ve even written one myself here: Escape Your Comfort Zone. But there’s only one problem. And that is they address the symptoms and not the cause.

When you go through a 50 comfort zone challenge list and tick them all off. What’s going to happen?

At first, you’re going to feel more confident in yourself and that you have accomplished a lot… And you have. I’m not going to take that away because doing one of those lists is great. But after time when you’ve forgotten about how much the list has pushed you forward, you’re only going to fall back into the same comfort zone you’ve had before. Until you decide to undertake another 50 comfort zone challenge list. Or something of the sort.

Why This Comfort Zone Challenge Is Different

There is a challenge that you can try. And let me tell you right now, that it’s not easy. It takes a lot of commitment. And you have to remind yourself every day, that you are doing this challenge. If you’re looking for a quick fix this isn’t for you. But in the long-term neither is a quick fix. The real challenge here is changing your mindset.

Because while there are GREAT tips that you can use AND should use in the beginning (like comfort zone tips and challenge ideas). This is the real challenge that gets you stepping out of your comfort zone AGAIN and AGAIN. If you really take this challenge to heart and practice it EVERY DAY. You are going to be met with an amazing life.

The Comfort Zone Challenge

So what is the comfort zone challenge?

Well, to put it simply it’s to start putting focus on your actions instead of the outcome. Because every time you are scared to do something new it’s because you’re placing fear on the outcome of what’s going to happen. You might hear reasons pop into your head about why you shouldn’t do something such as:

“What if people laugh at me or think I’m weird”, “What if I fail” and how about “What if I don’t like it”

…What if, what if, what if. How often do you hear yourself saying ‘what if’ right before you back down from something you want to do. And you’re not the only person. Everybody does it.

The Challenge

So this is the challenge. From now on every time you want to do something. Focus on the feeling you’ll get from JUST taking the action. Because if you focus on the outcome, chances are you’re going to talk yourself out of it.

And focusing on the action instead of the outcome couldn’t be summed up more perfectly than in this video:

If you can’t watch this video for whatever reason, then it’s about focusing on action over outcome dependency. In it, Elliot Hulse talks about hearing a bird singing in a tree. You might wake up in the morning and absolutely HATE the birds singing. You may want to throw a rock at it or go out there and shut it up. On the other hand, you might wake up and LOVE the way the bird is singing. It brightens up your day and makes you feel grateful that you’ve got another day on Earth.

BUT either way, the bird couldn’t give a fuck about what you think of his singing. You might love it or you might hate it. The only thing that matters to the bird is the action of singing. That’s the level you need to get too.

Your Values

For this, to work you need to change your values. You need to have a set of values for yourself that stop you worrying about the outcome of situations and actions. An important one for me is to ‘always go where I’m going to grow the most, even if it’s hard or uncomfortable’.

I’ve had times in my life where on a level I really didn’t want to do something. Because I was nervous and worried that I’d look stupid or fail. And to be honest, sometimes I did. My biggest fear used to be approaching people in a club. Approaching a girl and trying to have a conversation with her terrified me. And I think this an anxiety a lot of people have.

But when I looked at it more I realized. I wasn’t afraid of talking to somebody at a club. I was afraid of the outcome, being rejected and looking stupid. And that’s when I decided that even if that happened, even IF I look stupid, I had to do it anyway because no matter what I would grow from that experience.

And guess what, I did get rejected… loads of times. I’m not going to say the idea of getting rejected doesn’t bother me because it does. But the difference is now I don’t focus on getting rejected. I focus on having the conversation because that’s what I WANT to do. the outcome is unimportant to me.

So from now on

Instead of thinking “What if people laugh at me or think I’m weird” start thinking “I want to say this/do this/act this way because that is simply what I want to do regardless of the outcome”. Instead of thinking “What if I fail” instead think “If I fail or if I succeed it’s not important, the important thing for me is taking the action because it aligns with my values”.

The Benefit of This Comfort Zone Challenge

The benefit of this challenge is that you are going to have a VALID and WORTHY reason to step out of your comfort zone. In fact, if ‘enjoying the process and action instead of worrying about the outcome’ become one of your principles in life. Not only are you going to have far more experience in life. You’re also going to enjoy yourself a lot more. And do things, go places and meet people you never thought it would be possible to meet.

I hope after reading everything you can see how important it is to shift your focus from outcomes to action. Because at the end of the day, you are never going to control the outcome of any situation. You could go into a situation you are completely confident and a curveball could be thrown that completely throws you off. And on the other hand, something you think is a stretch out of your comfort zone could, in fact, be second nature to you!

Escape Your Comfort Zone – Ultimate Guide

What is a Comfort Zone?

A comfort zone is any space that you find yourself relaxed in. A place where you aren’t scared or exerting effort. For example cleaning your teeth (I hope) is in your comfort zone. It isn’t a physical space but a mental one. What you’re mentally comfortable doing. You may feel like your comfort zone is in your bedroom for example. But if you were suddenly sat in your bedroom with 100 strangers…it wouldn’t be too comfortable.

Why do you need to Escape Your Comfort Zone?

If you never left your comfort zone you’d never experience anything new in life. And that is what life is all about. Experience. If someone told you they could put you in a room with 3 meals a day and a bed, you’d be safe and live till 100. Would you do it? Of course not. But on a mental level that’s what you’re doing when you’re not always striving to escape your comfort zone!

The benefits of learning to escape your comfort zone now are also beneficial for you in the future. In the future you might be to afraid or uncomfortable doing something that, if only you put the time in now, you’d be completely comfortable with. So it’s imperative that you do everything that you can to escape your comfort zone!

Tips To Escape Your Comfort Zone

Know your why

You should write down or memorize the reasons why you want to escape your comfort zone. If you ever find yourself shying away from new challenges you’ll be able to recall your reasons and tackle your fears head on! Knowing your why is not just beneficial in tackling your comfort zone but all areas of life. And you should be encouraged to write down your ‘Why’ for living.

Understand it’s an opportunity for you to grow

Every time you face a situation that takes you outside of your comfort zone, remember this is an opportunity for you to grow. Don’t get nervous about it get excited. No matter what happens you are going to grow as a person. Don’t view yourself as a failure. There is no such thing as failure if you take the lesson from what you experience.

Become a ‘YES’ Man

Have you ever seen the film ‘Yes Man’ Starring Jim Carrey? If you haven’t essentially the film is about a man, who whenever a new opportunity arises, he just says yes. That is a prime example of what your life should be like. Become a ‘YES’ Man in your own life!  By putting yourself in new scenarios and situations you force yourself to grow and expand everyday!

Think it out in your head

Whenever I’m nervous or anxious about leaving my comfort zone I rationalise things in my head. I think about the worst case scenario, and then how unlikely it is that it’s going to happen. For example if I’m going to a new job interview what’s the worst thing that could happen? I’m not going to vomit everywhere or have uncontrollable diarrhoea. The worst thing that will happen is that I’ll make a few mistakes and not get the job, there’s 100’s more!

Find a supportive friend

If there’s something that you’re anxious about doing and you can take a friend with you, then why not? Bringing a friend along could make you feel more calm and less worried. So why not bring a friend, maybe they want to do it as well. Then you can both get our of your comfort zones together!

Create an Ultimatum

Have you ever heard of the website You put money on a commitment to yourself and if you lose… That money goes to charity. While you don’t have to make a money ultimatum why not think of some ultimatums you can make with yourself that will push you to grow out of your comfort zone.

Never go with the safe choice.

Start making it a habit to never go for the easy or ‘safe’ option. Start doing the things that are going to challenge you and make you uncomfortable whenever they arise. Just like I said before, understand that everything you do is an opportunity to grow. So start doing the things that are more difficult and make you risk a little more. You’ll thank yourself in the long run!

Create challenges

Create challenges everyday then go and smash them. They can be daily challenges or bigger challenges that take more time to work towards. For example one day you could set yourself a challenge to talk to more strangers. A comfort zone challenge I set myself was to do a 5 mile obstacle course. Creating a bigger challenge like that made me push myself everyday.

Make it your mission to do the things you want to do!

It may sound stupid but you know what I’m talking about. If you want to learn Spanish sign up to a Spanish class. If you’ve wanted to be a better dancer, learn to dance. There’s a million things that the world has to offer. Stop being afraid of taking the chance. If you change your mind and don’t like it who cares? Maybe it’s just not for you. There’s a million other things for you to try!

Just take the plunge

If none of the above are working for you then there’s one thing left for you to do. ALL IN. You only need a couple of seconds of stupidity. Don’t think. Just let your body move and your brain be dead and just do it. Live in the moment and be an idiot. You’ll thank yourself later!
